Bambu Lab R1
A 55W CO₂ laser with Bambu Lab's motion control: 600 × 300 mm work area, 1000 mm/s engraving, automatic optical alignment and Class 1 enclosed safety.
The Bambu Lab R1 is Bambu Lab's first CO₂ laser, and it brings the same approach as their 3D printers: automate the fiddly parts so the machine is ready when you are. A 55W CO₂ laser cuts up to 20 mm acrylic in a single pass, while the TriSense system — dual cameras, dual lasers and dual encoders — finds your workpiece and keeps every line within 0.2 mm of where you placed it.
The chore most CO₂ laser owners dread is optical-path alignment: test shots, thermal paper and trial and error. On the R1 it takes a clip-on sensor and about a minute. Add the Riser Base and Conveyor and the same machine feeds boards up to 3 metres long for furniture-scale work.

Why CO₂ rather than a diode laser
A CO₂ laser works at a 10.6 µm wavelength that wood, acrylic, leather and paper absorb far more efficiently than the ~450 nm blue light of a diode laser. The practical difference is clear materials: a diode beam passes straight through clear acrylic and glass, while a CO₂ beam is absorbed — so the R1 can cut clear acrylic and engrave glass. It also cuts thick stock in one pass where a diode needs several, with cleaner edges.

Choose the R1 for speed, automatic alignment, a smaller footprint and if you already use Bambu Lab printers. What to know before you buy
- Some features need add-ons. The Vision Encoder (for <0.1 mm absolute accuracy), medium- and long-focus lenses (for 18 mm walnut), the auto fire extinguishing system and the E1 Pro air purifier are sold separately.
- Riser Base and Conveyor change the safety class. With either fitted, the enclosure is no longer complete and the R1 becomes a Class 4 laser: CO₂ laser-safety eyewear is required, and it is intended for trained users.
- Ventilation is required. A fan and hose are included to vent smoke outside, or the E1 Pro purifier can filter it at the source. Plan where the exhaust goes before it arrives.
- You will need distilled water. The laser tube is water-cooled: the included antifreeze is diluted with 1,500 ml of distilled water, which is not supplied.
- Changing focus lenses is hands-on. Swapping to the medium- or long-focus lens means removing and refitting six screws, so it is not a quick change between jobs.
- It takes two people to move. At 33.5 kg the R1 needs a sturdy table and two people to lift it into position.
- Material presets are still limited at launch. Automatic material recognition works with Bambu Lab's own materials; early reviews note the wider preset library is still small, so for other materials you will set power and speed yourself.
Safety and workspace
CO₂ laser cutting produces smoke and fumes that must be vented outside or filtered. Never process PVC, vinyl or other chlorinated plastics, which release corrosive and toxic gases. Keep the lid closed during operation and never leave a cutting job unattended. The R1 operates between 10°C and 30°C and needs a stable surface with clearance around the machine.

Questions about the R1
How thick can the Bambu Lab R1 cut?
In a single pass, up to 20 mm acrylic and 15 mm black walnut plywood with the standard short-focus lens. With the medium- or long-focus lens (sold separately), it cuts up to 18 mm black walnut plywood; the long-focus lens is faster at the same thickness.
Can the R1 cut clear acrylic and glass?
It cuts clear acrylic and engraves glass. That is the key advantage of a CO₂ laser over a diode laser: diode light passes through clear materials, while the R1's 10.6 µm CO₂ beam is absorbed by them. Glass can be engraved but not cut.
Do I need safety glasses with the R1?
Not in standard enclosed use. The R1 is Class 1 under IEC 60825-1, so laser radiation stays inside the enclosure. If you fit the Riser Base or the Conveyor, the enclosure is no longer complete and the machine becomes Class 4, which requires CO₂ laser-safety eyewear and trained users.
Does the R1 need ventilation?
Yes. Laser cutting produces smoke and fumes. The R1 comes with a ventilation fan and hose to vent outside, and its crossflow system moves air through the chamber. If venting outside is not possible, the E1 Pro air purifier (sold separately) connects to the exhaust and filters smoke through layers including activated carbon.
Should I choose the Bambu Lab R1 or the xTool P2S?
Both are 55W desktop CO₂ lasers with a work area of about 600 × 300 mm and 3 m long-stock options. The R1 is faster (1000 mm/s against 600 mm/s), aligns its optical path automatically, and is smaller and lighter. The P2S supports LightBurn and a mobile app workflow and has a wider accessory range. If you already use Bambu Lab printers, the R1 fits that ecosystem.
Which bundle should I choose?
Choose the R1 on its own if your work fits within 600 × 300 mm. Choose the Long Material Bundle if you want to cut boards up to 3 m long or work on taller objects — it adds the Riser Base and Conveyor. Choose the Long Material & Rotary Bundle if you also want 360° engraving on cups, bottles and bowls.
